TTB COLA Data

Vodka Label Approvals by State

Every vodka Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau has issued since January 2020, ranked by the state of the TTB permit that filed it. One approval is one certificate, identified by its TTB ID. Labels filed under a TTB importer permit are counted in a single Imported bucket, because an importer's office state says nothing about where the vodka is made.

The figures below cover 12,797 approvals from January 2, 2020 to October 8, 2026. They are rebuilt from the TTB Public COLA Registry on every deploy of this site.

Methodology

Source. Every figure comes from the public TTB Certificate of Label Approval registry. A COLA is the federal approval a bottler or importer must hold before it can sell a labelled bottle across state lines. BUY.VODKA reads the public registry, keeps the vodka filings, and rebuilds this page on every deploy.

What one approval means. The state comes from the TTB permit number on each filing. A distilled spirits plant, brewery, or bonded winery permit names the state of the facility itself. Importer permits are never mapped to the importer's office state; they roll up into the Imported bucket. A permit the parse cannot place is shown in the Unknown row rather than being dropped. The buckets follow the permit, not the label's origin statement: a state row counts every filing from that state's facilities, including vodka distilled abroad and bottled there. The dataset holds 12,797 approvals across 8,637 product groups, because near-identical filings are grouped into one product record for the rest of the site. This page counts certificates, not product groups.

Scope. Vodka only. These counts are not all TTB label approvals and must not be quoted as such. Class and type strings are read from the filing itself.

Accounting. The rows account for every approval in the dataset: 12,797 counted, 0 excluded from the count; a permit that cannot be read is counted in the Unknown row instead of being dropped.
